Extra Room - Oatley

Alec and June, from Oatley in southern Sydney, live in a 1920s weatherboard house, which they renovated when Alec retired from work some 18 years ago.

They also have a large patio area that was under-utilised because it offered no protection from the wind, rain and sun.

Last year the couple decided it was time to address the problem so they could spend more time outdoors with their family.

"We looked at a number of different outdoor roofing systems before choosing a Vergola", says Alec. "It's better than the others."

Alec says his new Vergola was like adding an extra room.

"It's just perfect for outdoor entertaining," he said.

The couple's 7m x 4m Vergola provides warmth in winter and offers cool shade in summer. It also provides natural light and ventilation.

Alec says he chose downlights for dining at night and also a rain sensor so the roof closes automatically when the weather turns.
