What Does a Vergola Cost? Sydney & NSW Price Guide | Vergola®

,

It’s usually one of the first questions people ask us, and it’s a fair one. The honest answer is that every Vergola® is custom-designed for the home it sits on, so the price depends on your space and how you want to use it.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through what’s included in the price, the main things that affect it, and how to get an accurate figure for your home.

What’s included in the price of a Vergola?

When you compare quotes, it helps to know what you’re comparing. A Vergola NSW quote covers the whole job:

  • Design – a consultant visits your home and designs a roof to suit your space, the way the sun moves across it, and the style of your home.
  • Australian-made louvres – double-skinned, aerofoil-shaped louvres made from BlueScope COLORBOND® steel.
  • Motorised operation – open and close the louvres at the touch of a button, with an automatic rain sensor that closes them when it rains.
  • Installation – by our own experienced team.
  • Warranty – 2 years on manufactured parts and service, and 7 years on structural components.

What affects the cost of a Vergola?

1. The size of the area

Size is the biggest factor. A larger area needs more louvres, more framing and more motor capacity, so the total cost goes up. But the rate per square metre comes down as the size of your Vergola increases, so larger areas often represent better value. Your roof may also be divided into several bays, each of which can be controlled separately.

2. Roof style

A Vergola can be designed as a flat roof, skillion, box frame or A-frame, with curved beams, or as an insert into an existing roof. A simple rectangular roof attached to the house is the most cost-effective. Curved, round, triangular and freestanding designs involve more work, but can suit some homes beautifully.

3. A new structure or an existing one

If you’re building a new pergola, the posts and frame are part of the cost. They can be steel, timber or aluminium to suit your home. If you already have a sound structure, a Vergola can often be fitted to it, which may reduce the cost. Your consultant will check whether it’s suitable.

4. How it connects to your home

Whether the roof is freestanding or attached to the house, its height, and how it meets your existing roofline and gutters all affect the design and installation.

5. Site access

A ground-floor patio with easy access is quicker to install than a first-floor balcony, a sloping block or a tight courtyard.

6. Colours and finishes

Vergola offers a range of standard COLORBOND® colours chosen to suit the Australian landscape. If you want an exact match to your home, custom colours are available through powder-coating.

7. Controls and extras

Options such as the smartphone app, built-in lighting and louvre side screens add convenience, comfort and privacy, and are reflected in the price.

8. Council and engineering requirements

Some projects need council approval or engineering certification, depending on the size and position of the roof. Read our guide on council approval for outdoor covered areas in NSW, and we’ll let you know what applies to your home.

Why not just compare the price per square metre?

It’s tempting to compare roofs by price per square metre, but it rarely tells the full story. The rate per square metre falls as the area gets bigger, and the same area can cost quite differently depending on roof style, access and whether a new structure is needed. Two louvre roofs of the same size can also be very different products: they may look alike from a distance, but there’s real variation in what you get for your money. An accurate quote for your actual space is the most reliable way to compare.

Vergola vs cheaper louvre roofs: what’s the difference?

There are plenty of look-alike louvre roofs on the market, and some will quote less. Here’s what the difference in price buys you:

  • Comfort underneath. Vergola louvres are double-skinned COLORBOND® steel with an insulating air gap. Many alternatives use single-skin aluminium blades, which offer far less insulation, so the space below can get noticeably hotter in summer.
  • The original system. Vergola® was invented in Australia in 1984 and is a Prince Philip Design Award winner. The system has been refined over four decades.
  • A local, family business. Vergola NSW has served Sydney and northern NSW for more than 40 years, and has been a member of the Housing Industry Association for 30 years. Most of our team have been with us for many years, and we’re here to look after your Vergola long after it’s installed.
  • Customers who recommend us. Most of our new customers come to us through referrals from friends, family and past clients.

Is a Vergola worth the investment?

A Vergola turns an outdoor area you use on fine days into a room you can use all year. Open the louvres to let in the winter sun, angle them for shade in summer, and let the rain sensor close them when the weather turns. As one of our customers put it: “We can actually use the outdoor area now.” It can also add appeal when it comes time to sell.
